Bread to the Wise is Book I of The Libertine trilogy. In 1964 Robert Gattling is an assistant vice-president at a prestigious university, a wunderkind. By 1972 he’s a janitor. It’s like the bad things that interrupted Gattling’s lucky streak come back to haunt him. Is ardent love enough to bring him back from the depths? A fascinating book. Angus Brownfield's "Bread to the Wise" posits a protagonist, Robert Gattling, who has rolled through a few rough patches in his life with barely a scratch -- physical, that is. One doesn't kill a man without being deeply marked. Imagine a Humphrey Bogart-type character: intelligent, courageous, more or less generous... but inwardly broken. Gattling could be governor, but chooses to be a janitor. The problem with life is that it serves up the situations and challenges from which we cannot hide. I enjoyed the book very much. BTW -- Gattling appears in several more books by Brownfield. "Bread to the Wise" is a good place to meet him.Product details
