This book is part I in a trilogy about a zombie apocalypse back in the old west. My thoughts are as follows: The writer does a very good job on character development, which is important if you want people to come back for the rest of the trilogy. She also does a very good job at pacing and never lets it get boring to the point where you want to put it down and take a break. And where I thought she really excelled was with her descriptive writing. The way she described how the zombies smelled, both alive and when burning, as well as what it felt like to be bit and the gut-wrenching, nauseating pain one had to endure was really well done. My only complaint is that if I hadn't known the gender of the author, I definitely would have before I was halfway through the first book. It was made clear early on that one of the two main characters, a young lady nicknamed Red, was a loner, fiercely independent and infuriatingly stubborn, so I'm not sure we needed to be reminded of that every ten pages or so. It got to the point where even though I liked her character, I was hoping someone would humble her and bring her down a few notches. It was just too much. And while we're on the topic of "just too much," the same could be said of the relationship between Red and Trace, who was the other main character. Yes, they loved each other and yes, they were devoted to each other and yes, they turned each other on, but the whole "I would give my life and the lives of my next two generations for just one more opportunity to clean the dirt from beneath your toe nails," just got to be a little much after awhile. Not to mention the continual, reciprocal promises from all of the characters regarding how they would never EVER let anything happen to anyone else, even though no one ever kept their promise. It was a zombie apocalypse, of course bad things were going to happen. Overall, though, Scott is a very good writer, she knows how to keep the story moving, her character development is superb (loved the young Indian boy), and I highly recommend this trilogy.Tags : Wanted: Dead or Undead [Angela Scott] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. WINNER: Kindle Book Review Best Indie Book of 2012 - Young Adult WINNER: League of Utah Writers Golden Quill Award 2012 FINALIST: The 2012 USA Best Book Awards (sponsored by USA Book News) - Young Adult SECOND PLACE: The 2012 Sharp Writ Book Awards - Young Adult Evolved Publishing presents the award-winning Wanted: Dead or Undead (Book 1 of The Zombie West Series) by Angela Scott. WANTED DEAD OR UNDEAD, by Angela Scott, is an endlessly entertaining zombie book. Trace Monroe is a bounty hunter in the old west when he comes across "Red," a woman he's pretty sure he's seen on a wanted poster. She's skittish, so he approaches her cautiously, willing to join her entourage and spend whatever time it takes to gain her trust. After all, it'll be easier to turn her in if she's compliant.
The only problem is, Red's skittish in the extreme, and is a crack shot. That comes from living on her own and having to fight off zombies on a regular basis. That's all Trace knows or can guess about her. But what he doesn't know about her background is a deep, dark secret that could get them all killed. Worse still, he finds himself falling for her. What's a bounty hunter to do?
The story sucked me in from the start and never let go. Red and Trace, or "Cowboy," as she calls him, bounce from one catastrophe to another, surviving by a miniscule margin, and picking up stragglers along the way. When at last Trace finds out Red's secret, will it make them grow closer, or explode in their faces? The old west setting is unique for a zombie novel in my experience, and I was amazed at how well it fit. The characters are believable and you'll find yourself pulling for them as they ricochet from one zombie encounter to another.
Give "WANTED DEAD OR UNDEAD" a try. You won't be sorry!
I have read Angela Scott’s books before and loved them, this was no different. Her books tend to have a layer of psychology and a real human element that other authors strive for. Even in this, a zombie book, it is more about the people than the zombies that they are running from. And zombies are not the only horror in this world.
Although the main character, Red, is extremely strong and very sarcastic, I can tell that she has just been hardened by this cruel world that she has found herself. She is willing to shoot and ask questions later because that is how you have to survive in this world. It’s fitting but it does take a bit of a toll when she meets Trace. She’s so hardened and so distrusting that she is putting everyone at a distance, and although I cannot blame her I still want for her to have these human moments. I mean otherwise why live? Isn’t acting like a zombie synonymous with pretty much being a zombie?
But, just as I was about to give up on her some things come out and the plot thickens, quite a bit! There are more characters introduced, more drama, more zombies, and more craziness! And although this ends on a cliff hanger I really liked where it ended. It was like a chapter of Red’s life closed and she’s ready for the next, no matter how terrifying.
The one downside is the timing. I could not place how much time had passed, nor could I understand what ages the characters were. I also listened on Audible and although the narrator was very good I think it took away from the story a bit. By the thick Southern accent it was hard to place ages. Easy to place sarcasm though!
Wow!!
I normally avoid all things YA. Zombies don't really hold any appeal for me and Western Romance seemed more for my mama's generation. So why I even picked this book up I really don't know. I know I was in a reading slump and was looking for something out of my norm. This appeared somewhere in my search, it was free and had good reviews so I picked it up. Truthfully, I didn't expect to make it beyond a few chapters.
Surprise!!!!! I couldn't put it down. I read it from beginning to end in one day! I was blown away. It was so much more than I expected. I loved the characters. No immature, whiny teenagers here. Both the H/h were strong, independent and interesting.
The story kept me well entertained. It has good doses of humor, action, suspense, romance and of course, some Zombie gore. I laughed, I teared up and my heart raced. I love when a story elicits a wide range of emotion from me.
I have since purchased the next two books in the series and can't wait to see where they will take me.
Thank you Angela Scott for taking me on an unexpected ride.
