“the loss of A Mother’s loss” is a thought provoking memoir from a fledgling new author, Jennifer Shriver. Shriver takes her readers through her life, much of it painful and sad. Her thoughts and narrative are raw and sensitive drawing in the reader so much that the reader finds himself or herself in the story. When tension is in the writing, the reader feels it, a rare quality for a new writer. Her relationship with her Father is nonexistent and with her mother confusing and barbed. She tries to get along with her sister but finds it impossible. While all of this seems depressing and sad this author treats her readers to a meaningful side of life as she finds her way.
This is a fascinating story of perseverance and the will to overcome. Organized in a beautiful way with segue ways that flow like a manuscript of a seasoned writer. I enjoyed this book, this intensified look at the family member that just seems so different to belong. For me this was a wonderful story that needs some editing to attain 5 stars. I hope this new voice will let us in on more of her stories. Her talent is just surfacing so I look forward to reading her next book.

I really enjoyed this book and honestly could not put it down. Perhaps I am biased because I know the author from childhood. I am probably also biased as, even though without name, I was mentioned at least two times. It is a surreal experience to learn about things that happened around you from a different perspective that you had ever known before. Of course everyone says there are three sides to a story and of course you can only know one yourself, it isn't often you get to see one of the other side's. people's childhoods are often fraught with numerous obstacles and tumultuous relationships. I think it makes it more difficult when one of those relationships is with a parent and unfortunately you never get to resolve what happened before they passed away. That is what this book has in-store for its readers. The emotions held within its pages are very raw and detail a life that was fraught with many struggles and life lessons as well. Although we may not share all of the author's formative experiences, I think we can all hope to be able to do exactly what she did in the end, make it through and move on. I wish the author happiness in her current life and love and health to her family -)

What makes a story worth reading for me, is when I am transported to the time and place in which it was written. This book does just that. While reading it, I shared confusion with the child, outrage alongside the teenager, and shared sadness of the adult as the author takes us thru her life with all it's frustrations. It was one of those books you finish reading and you just can't stop thinking about the characters, and hoping that the future brings only the best.
My heart aches as I read your story. ..but such a heart felt telling, from your most personal and intimate life. I can't wait to read more from you! Please don't stop writing! You have a great gift and I am privileged to have the chance to follow this new author! This is a must read!
